Hedwig Dances Presents Jan Bartoszek's META | MOR | PHOS - A Triadic Fiction - a co-production with the Bauhaus Dessau Foundation along with SYZYGY, a new work by Mike Tyus

Hedwig Dances proudly presents two premieres: META | MOR | PHOS – A Triadic Fiction (U.S. premiere), a co-production between Hedwig Dances and the Bauhaus Dessau Foundation, and SYZYGY, a new work by guest artist Mike Tyus.

META | MOR | PHOS - A Triadic Fiction is a sequel to Oskar Schlemmer’s 1922 work, “Triadic Ballet,” an icon of dance and performance art. It received critical acclaim at the work’s historic September world premiere at the Bauhausfest 2022 in the state-of-the-art Bauhaus Museum in Dessau, Germany before sold-out audiences. While Schlemmer’s ballet oriented itself towards a man-machine symbiosis META | MOR | PHOS redirects itself to an existential connection to the natural world through the metamorphosis of insects. Structured in three parts (larva, pupa, imago) with a prologue and epilogue, META | MOR | PHOS reimagines Schlemmer’s classic work for the 21st century.

Choreographed by Hedwig Dances' artistic director Jan Bartoszek with dramaturgy by Bauhaus researcher and stage director Torsten Blume, the production includes authentic reproductions of Oskar Schlemmer’s “Triadic Ballet” costumes as well as newly designed costumes by Blume and Jacky Kelsey fabricated by the Chicago Puppet Studio. Patricia Taxxon composed the score, with additional music and sound design by Richard Woodbury. Excerpts from the work were performed for the ELEVATE Chicago festival at the Dance Center of Columbia College Chicago in October.

SYZYGY is a commissioned work by guest choreographer Mike Tyus, an award-winning dancer, choreographer, and creative director from Los Angeles, California. The work is an examination of the alignment of opposing forces, three celestial bodies found in orbit, the pairing of chromosomes in the process of meiosis, the human psyche in a balancing act between the shadow, the persona, and the self. A conjunction that reminds us that all things are connected, bound to a universal dance that moves for a millennia and day.

Hedwig Dances’ spring concert will be staged in the theater at the Ruth Page Center, 1016 N. Dearborn, Chicago, IL. Evening shows take place on April 14, 15, 21 and 22 at 7:30 pm, with a matinee on Saturday, April 22 at 3:00 pm.
